Suggest that you type Header (top) lines first, hit <enter> about 25 times, then type

The Lion came from clipart - let's do it - Click Insert - Picture - Clipart. Select Image.

Click OK - Lion should be pasted to screen between Header and Footer. Find drag-points

(boxes at corners and midpoints). Point to drag button in upper left hand corner. Size the

image by dragging (point at drag point, hold button down, look for ß à 2 headed arrow,

then size image by moving dragpoint (called `dragging').

Make it look artistic, balance it, position it. Create an appearance at least as good

There are a lot of extremely interesting and powerful programs that are installed as part of

Most are helpful, even to the point of making you into a `power user', but several programs,

-- those that can destroy data on your hard drive - require that you know what you are doing. Programs like -- format.com, fdisk, and partition magic - require supervision to use as they

can and will destroy your data if used incorrectly. And if you take your system `down', you

might flunk this course ...

Most programs (called .exe programs) are very interesting. To `discover' them, use a file manager like winfile or explorer or xtree / ztree or even DOS.

To use winfile, from `run' which appears when you click `start', type winfile - and the file manager comes up. Click file - search - then search for *.exe files starting from c:\windows.

(This finds all executable files (executable files end with .exe, or .com, or even .bat)). When you have this list in front of you, check out the following and write on the form what their function is:

calc - cdplayer (I told you this was very cool) - attrib - chkdsk - find - label - mem - move - scandisk - sort - xcopy - defrag - explorer - pbrush - ping - progman - sndrec32 (very cool digital

voice recorder!) -- etc [You can even get into some players that play video files!] I told you that

this was exciting!

For .com files - check out - doskey, diskcopy, mode, edit. [format.com will erase all data from

A disk, and create a new volume with an empty directory]. You can format a floppy disk from

MyComputer.

When you work on a computer, it is important that you are very focussed, and clear-minded!

Also experimentation and discovery is good, but always think about what you are doing. You are

I want you to find Deming on the WEB, [use mamma.com or goto or dogpile or your search engine of choice], find out the name of the Award for Quality in Japan. Read enough about W. Edwards Deming so that you understand him. Look up his 14 Principles for Management. Write from 1 to 3 paragraphs or more (like Carlos Monroe did), giving me your reaction to Dr. Deming. It is important that you understand the man, then you give me your reaction, your 'take', your perspective on him. Learning does not take place unless there is a change made. I need you to relate, to connect, to go '1-on-1' with the material. It does not matter whether you agree with the works of Dr. Deming, but only that you 'react' to the material! Deming affected me and my partners to the point that we developed and taught a State Funded course on Quality Management to Manufacturing employees, and wrote a book that included a chapter on "Leadership in the High Performance Workplace", a concept advocated by James Bratt and Ken Nather when they were at the Employment Training Panel for the State of California.

The policy of Continuous Quality Improvement and Innovation (advocated by Juan Cruz of the State Chancellor's Office) derived from Deming's Principles. {Try to make the connection for yourself). And it does not hurt to know something about these individuals. Search for "Dr. Bernie Siegal" who offers a compendium of medical advice, that my mother happily uses as a medical encyclopedia. Others are Gen George Patton, etc. [choose a couple]. This would be a good time to search for your own name. Hopefully, this will trigger connecting to a geneology data base, and even finding some family members. One student showed off her son's web page -- he is a starting football player for a university. Do several searches to verify that you have the skill down. Putting names in quotes, like "Jim Rome" ensures that you get exactly that. If you type Jim Rome without quotes, you could get everyone named Jim and every reference to Rome. "Have a good take."

which requires the SHIFT Key, and the @ symbol -- which is a SHIFT '2'].  

Complete this assignment by writing correctly some email addresses,
and web addresses, which you can find in the 'location' line of any
web page.  Use symbols like  '//' (forward slash) and tilde (~) correctly.
And of course, the famous  dot is a period.

yourname.htm shows your picture, which you get from a digital camera
(see me), and career, hobby, and like are short biographical descriptions.

The models of these are on the web site.

I am interested in your color selection, and content of your page.
Please look under 'Student Home Page' for examples.

Possibly, we can add voice, music, and video.  How cool.  If not in this
class, but the Javascript/HTML (757) class that I teach.

You will be basically using the templates provided, and making changes
on them, then testing them by running them with Netscape or Explorer
browsers.  I like to have one window open in EDIT (a simple word processor
editor), and a 2nd window open in Netscape or Internet Explorer, and make
the changes in EDIT, save them as consecutively different files (more later)
and open and view them in the Browser.  

You can work fast, and effectively this way.  Other students, like
Vanessa, use FrontPage, and Curly writes her pages in WORD, then saves
them as HTML, and runs them.   

No one way is correct -- you must find your own style.

Goals of this assignment are:

For you to create a web presence.

Hopefully, we can transfer your html up the web, and link
you into the CyberClassRoom as other students have done.

Understand the basics of HTML -- the codes, the symbols, the
way things begin  (like <HTML>)   and end  (like </HTML>).

Also, I am not able to say it well, but there is a lot of
'visual art' that goes into a homepage.  If you are like me,
you can figure it out logically,  while some students, like Rhandi,
have a flair for color.   Go!  Show me what you know!


This is 400 points to get it working on your disk, and printed
out in your book, plus 100 to get an home page address, say, from
tripod.com  or  homestead.com, and transfer your homepage to that
site, then give it to me so that it can be linked to the Cyber
ClassRoom.

How To:

Load EXCEL. That is, find the EXCEL icon, click it to start. You will see Toolbars with COLUMNS (A,B,C,D,etc) and Rows (1,2,3,4..) on the screen. Note at this point, you have a large table (called 'spreadsheet') in front of you. The boxes are called 'cells'. You can move from cell to cell with the mouse which becomes the 'cell pointer' or with the cursor-control (arrow keys) on the keypad, (press 'Num Lock' off). Try moving the cell pointer from A1 to D6. I just realized that I use the arrow keys to move the cell pointer. Try it. Go to A1. TYPE IN -- EXPENSE BY CATEGORY Then highlight "EXPENSE BY CATEGORY" by positioning mouse at the E and holding the button down while you drag it across to the Y in CATEGORY. Keep experimenting until you get 'highlighting' down. When you have it highlighted, click the arrow next to the Font Size Box, select 16 (or any large size you like). This makes a large Title. Go to A2. TYPE IN -- YOUR NAME (use your own name) Repeat for YOUR NAME. You may want it to be smaller, say 14 font size. Go to A4. Type CATEG. Press Right Arrow to B4. Type JAN Continue with MAR, etc all the way to TOTAL. (This is called enter 'cell pointer control' and entering Text Information.) Continue until you get this done. Understand that there each cell contains only 1 word. Take your time, and get it down. I just typed in CATEG, then hit the 'right arrow' key (Num Lock is off, right?), and entered all the Months. At this point, save your work. I want to teach you to save frequently and back up your work, so you can always 'back track' to an earlier version when you make an error. So click File - Save As - In the File name box, type 701-excel-01a [the name of the assignment is 701-excel-01 and this is version 'a'] and click the save button. This is very cool, because every 5 minutes or so, you will save your work as 701-excel-01b, 701-excel-01c, etc ... and when you 'goof up' as we all do, you can just revert to an earlier version! And if you make a typing mistake, just hit the 'backspace key' above Enter and correct it. You can also click on the word mispelled, then click on the word as it appears in the 3rd toolbar, and move the cursor to the middle of the word and fix it then and there! Hit the to state that you are done editing. Next, type salary, rent, trans, supp, util, labor, misc down the first column, following the pattern. Now comes entering numbers. I would use the numbers on the top of the keyboard, because I use the keypad for cursor control. Enter any 2 or 3 or 4 digit numbers for SAL, moving across until you reach June. I entered numbers then hit the right arrow key. Stop at Total. This has to be a formula, it is the sum of all the SALARIES from JAN to JUNE. Of course, you have noted that the Months line up to the left, and the numbers to the right. Say 'left-justification for text, and right-justification for numeric data'. It will always be that way. Numbers and Text are different. You can calculate with numbers, not so with text, of course. Numbers work from right to left, and the position of a digit is important (say 'positional notattion'). Anyway, we need to calculate the sum of all salaries for that 6 month period. So in the cell under TOTAL, we type =SUM(A6:F6) Let's talk about this. = starts a function named SUM. =SUM is a powerful built-in function that will return the sum of the range within the parantheses. The range is from A6:F6, the addresses of the first 6 months. So this is very cool. You are instructing EXCEL to take the sum of the numbers in cells A6 thru F6. Always start left to right. The math functions of EXCEL are marvelous, and if you want to go off to look at them, and can find for example the Mortgage Payment function, give yourself 40 points on the Extra Credit page. (Experiment using the HELP icon, click - index - math functions -- try to 'get into the power of the Help key and the vast array of Math functions.) At point, you have the SAL row done. Repeat for the rest of the rows. This is a bit boring, so vary the numbers a bit. Don't enter anything under TOTAL, of course. Now, we are going to copy (say 'replicate') the formula under TOTAL, to the rows under it. Let's go. Point to the formula. Note the drag point in the lower right hand corner. Point to the drag point, note that it turns into a cross. Good. Now press the button and drag it down 6 rows. Dragging means holding the button down while you move the mouse, same way that you highlighted text. Let go of the mouse, of course when you are down 6 rows, and you have replicated the formula. What you have done, is repeated the formula for the bottom rows, using the parameters of the 1st formula, so notice that the address coordinates changed for the =sum function in each row. Gadzooks, check this out, and begin thinking about it. You may want to begin to talk to yourself about relative and absolute addressing, for extra credit. Now you are done with the Spreadsheet, and you are ready to graph it, to build a graph from it. About this time, you should save again, right. Save as 701-excel-01b (you knew that, right?) Now we have to think ... Hmm ... I will put Categories on the bottom (say 'X axis), and plot Totals vertically (Y axis). Your basic X and Y graph. Repeat after me ... we are going to plot Categories vs. Totals. And the whole trick is to highlight the 2 colomns that we are goint to plot. We have to highlight both the CATEG and the TOTAL column, so we have to use the Ctrl key as we drag and highlight the CATEG column, then highlight the Total column. You know that you are done when both columns are hightlighted! By keeping the Ctrl key down, you are able to highlight 2 columns. Trying again: Point to the midde of the cell containing Salary - Press Ctrl key - drag mouse down thru MISC (you have (1) column highlighted). Keep the Ctrl key down, and point to H5, the row total for SALARY. Find H5 right now. Point to it. Click on it. Drag down to H11. At this point, you should have two columns highlighted. Saying it again: Hold Ctrl key down. Highlight 1st column. Release Mouse Button, point to Total Column, and Highlight it! This is can be tricky, keep 'hacking' away until you get it. Help is available if you get stuck. Then find Chart Wizard icon on 2nd toolbar. Find it by passing mouse over each icon until you find it! Click it -- (and you are passing 2 columns to be plotted into the Chart Wizard). Good move. You are at Step 1 of 4 - Chart Type. Select Column for Chart Type. At this point, you are encouraged -- it is very cool -- for you to experiment with various types -- be a 'hacker'. Click Next. You are at Step 2 of 4 - Chart Source Data. You see the graph and the data range. Click [next] to pass by. (You can study this page later). (Note at this point, the quality of work that Microsoft has put into this Chart Wizard.) Next, Step 3 of 4 - Chart Options. For Chart Title, enter EXPENSE BY CATEGORY For Category (x) axis, enter Expense by Type For Value (y) axix, enter Expense Amount On Step 4 of 4 - Chart Location. Click Finish (accept defaults). Now you have a chart object in the middle of your sheet (spreadsheet). Drag it down, under the spreadsheet, and place it artistically, aesthetically, balance it on the page. Use Print Preview to see how it looks. Don't quit until it look at least as good as the examples in the book. Saying it again, click on the chart, drag it to where you want it, click outside to chart to release the drag points, do print preview, keep moving it until you get it. (seek help if necessary). Some advanced stuff. Please note 'link to embedded object' stuff: when you change numbers on the sheet, it immediately plots those changes on the chart. How cool! Also, you may change any of the parts inside the chart by clicking on them. For example, I got rid of [Series 1] by clicking with left button, then right button - clear. Very nice. You may re-proportion the elements of the chart by selecting them by clicking on them, and stretching them out. When you have this chart done, go ahead and produce different versions of it -- like Pie or Expanded Pie Chart -- for 100 points each to a maximum of 600 points for Excel Charts. You also need to be able to Sort Data. Just select the range to be sorted, find SORT under DATA, and experiment with it. (I owe you more information here.) Just remember that when you sort on a field, say names in a phone book, you must also include in the range to be sorted, the numbers that go with those names! Think of the distrastrous consequences of sorting the name, and leaving the in the the original order! WOW! There is lots more that can be done with EXCEL. Really, it is the Numbers-Thinking-Person's tool. You can fall in love with it, just as you can with WORD. What you can do with word processing in WORD, you can also do with numbers in EXCEL. Entire programs (mortgage amortization) can be done in minutes with one line of code, replacing entire programs in COBOL or Java (Java allows you to post on the web). Soon I think Excel will also convert to HTML. Wait a minute! I just checked, and in my EXCEL 2000, I can save an EXCEL program to the Web! Gadzooks! I am happy to correct myself! Get involved with EXCEL, it is great for mathematical calulations. You can even program with it, that is, create Macros which are program statements in Visual Basic! It should be part of your Information Technology Toolkit. Learn to use the help key. Go ahead and look up exponentiaton, and log, and Future Value calculations for extra points! I hope that you 'get' that I just introducing you to one of the Programming Loves of your Life, and by using it in a lifelong relationship, you will be a Power Information User! In any case, create up to 6 different sheets -- you may run different charts based on the same data, or try different data -- Note the analysis of Pizza Cost per square inch example. I am going to do that one again right now.

So +c4^2 means  the contents of C4 is squared.   The plus
sign is used when you refer to a cell's address.
