 1.   Just be sure that you are doing your attendance -- https://auciello.tripod.com/deform7830.html

 2.  CIS 701 Students:   The "701 Start Disk" contains 80 lessons that when passed will earn you 25 points each.   How many points is that?   Bring me the disk to be graded in K302.

3.   Introductory Quiz 01 -- https://auciello.tripod.com/iq01.html  -- is so vital to take as it explains how this entire course works!

4.   If you are not getting emails from me, clear out your inbox, and send me your email address, include your name.   Go ahead and create a 2nd backup email address and send that also.   If your emails bounce back, my emailer program drops you from the distribution list, so you have to be diligent about maintaining an active email address.

5. Here is a copy of Week 2 and Week 3's email messages.

Greetings:

Week 3:

(1) ALL STUDENTS:   YOUR GRADE IS BASED ON WHAT  https://auciello.tripod.com/deform7830.html    SHOWS THAT YOU REPORTED.  THE ENTRIES ARE TIME-STAMPED, SO YOU CAN'T GO BACK,  SO WORK A BIT EVERY DAY, AND REPORT YOUR PROGRESS!   ALSO,   https://auciello.tripod.com/iq01html   IS A REQUIRED QUIZ.

(2) STILL GIVING OUT ADD CARDS. SEE ME.   MY SCHEDULE IS

                       M     T     W
7AM                 701   LAB   701
9AM                 757   LAB   757
COME SEE ME DURING THE 701 CLASSES OR THE LAB IN K302.

CIS 701
For this week, the assignments are simple:   CIS 701,  all classes,  keep working on your business card.

I preach what is called  "Digital - Virtual - Presence",  thus it becomes essential to establish yourself with a card with a cell #,  email address, and even a Home Page on it.   For 25pts (25dvp),  what does having such a card say about you?   (I apologize for the dumb question.)

I have the glossy photo paper now, enough for this week.  Please try to buy more at Fry's electronics.  If you pay more than $4.00 for 20, you are paying too much.  Look for sales!

How to make the card is also explained on   https://auciello.tripod.com/701mashel.htm
(No. 19)   Read if you need it.  If you don't, please write a your step-by-step analysis of how to do the project for 25mashel  points.

CIS 757  A student asked me if we were doing  "Business Card 101"  -- that was very witty.   No, I would say "Not".    I just want you to get images ready for the Big Event -- the famous

This week, I will introduce the source code behind the slide show, and show you how to insert images and text!   I really want you to get "immersed" with this "Visual Communication" project.  I suggest that you develop it and market it as a photo album commemerating events, and even earn some consulting money.     Prepare to insert your card as an image,  and possibly another image, a clean head shot of yourself, crisp image.   I want to see some High Performance on this, please!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
WEEK 2 EMAIL

This week, please do the read the following:

Many students got an Yahoo! email account by typing http://www.yahoo.com and under signing up for a Yahoo! Mail account under "Personal Assistant" on the right-hand side.

Follow the prompts. Pick a unique email name, say, for example, your- last-name, zipcode -- patterson90017@hotmail.com – as many email names are already taken!

Or you may come in to K302, anytime Tues Morning, for help.

Then look for emails from me once or twice per week. Make sure that your inbox is not full – keep it clear, and email yourself frequently to ensure that you are receiving messages.  Keeping in contact is essential to passing this course! To facilitate this, please do the following:
  1. Listen to recorded messages weekly on (213) 763-7268.

  2. Read "NEWS" on my web site, which is our Virtual Classroom – Click http://auciello.tripod.com Click NEWS (right under pictures).

  3. Read ‘a-grams', about 1 per week. Click INTRO to read them, and even go ahead a bit.

  4. Check for Emails that I will send about once per week. If your email "bounces back", you are removed from the distribution list until you email me with at least one correct email address. Two email addresses is a good idea.

  5. Visit me any Tues Morning in K302 (Office Hours / Lab Hours).
This week – week 2 – all classes are doing Business Cards. This is explained in detail under NEWS.

Working with you to ensure your success. Be Well. Prof. A. out.

Rev July 25.2004.

New:  All Students -- There is a perfect quiz-lesson just finished on WORD -- click  https://auciello.tripod.com/woqu01.html

It is comprehensive, so I made it worth 300 points.  It is really good, if I can have "pride of authorship".   Spend hours and days on it if you have to.  It is that good!

Question:  "Do I need a Password and an ID to use your site?"  NO, as you have already, hopefully, discovered,  just type http://auciello.tripod.com  then find the Welcome Message and read and follow the a-grams.  Easy stuff.

---->  ATTENDANCE:  CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO BE SURE THAT YOUR NAME ISS ON  https://auciello.tripod.com/deform7966.html.txt  (click it)

----> AND ON  https://auciello.tripod.com/iq01.html.txt   THIS IS EVIDENCE THAT YOU ARE FUNCTIONAL IN THIS  ONLINE CLASS.

NOT GETTING EMAILS FROM ME TWICE A WEEK?   DID NOT MEET PROF A. / MISSED ORIENTATION?   NOT CALLING 213.763.7268 FOR MESSAGES?  NOT REPORTING ATTENDANCE ON LINE?

THEN EMAIL ME IMMEDIATELY BY CLICKING ProfA@Auciello.Net -- sending me your STUDENT ID, YOUR ADDRESS, YOUR PHONE NUMBER, along with a story why we have not connected.  Plus a promise to catch up by doing everything mentioned in this a-gram, and https://auciello.tripod.com/a-gram1.html  --  If you don't know how this class works --  Put "CIS 701 -- Help Me!  Mr. A!" -- in the subject line of your email.

Changing the subject -- let me give you 100 extra credit points if you can tell me who invented / discovered Binary Math (the True / False, 1/0, On/Off logic) that is the basis of how computers work!   100bin

Question:  Mr. A. -- Do I really have to see you every 2 weeks?  Do I really have to meet w. you personally?   YES.   If you are busy working away, and operating this course well, then see me less.  If having trouble, new to computers, need attention and Capuccino,  you must come in -- Do you know what days and times?

Another Question: "Mr. A., I thought an online computer course was supposed to be easy, but ever since I signed up, I have been getting phone calls from your TA, I have to read your website, read lots of emails that push me,  and I have to read a lot of a-grams, and submit my responses  which makes me accountable -- What is up with that?"

THAT IS A GREAT QUESTION:  LET ME TRY TO EXPLAIN -- Some of us love computers, and we want to recruit and convert you to become Power Users.  This is because we know how Vital this is.  We have crossed the "Digital Divide" and it is filled with Opportunity, and Success over here.  We know that those on the No-Tech or Low-Tech of the DD will not be able to compete with a person who can travel with a Wireless Laptop,  and do his/her work Anytime / Anywhere.  [ Ask me if I know someone personally who can travel or visit any part of the country, and do her work anywhere?]

Further, and this is strong medicine, if  YOU don't get these computer skills, there is a "techie" generation behind you coming up fast!   Email me if you  know what I am talking about.   So we "hackers" who are also teachers will give the hardest courses because we are bound by our consciences to do our best to help "you think critically and solve problems using a computer."    Find the logo that I use and explain the Standard Curve, the Hyper-extended (Taguchi) curve, and what "TECHNOLOGY OPTIMIZES PERFORMANCE" means for 100 (100taguchi) points.

For 50 points more, email me and tell me how Technology can help improve your life and work!  50life.  Go ahead and read all the a-grams, and use the 701 Master Help file to assist your doing projects.  You can do them in the order of GRADE.DOC or in any order!   More to follow ... next a-gram.  [50 points -- what does a-gram stand for?]  Clue "Z-Gram".  50agram.

POINT OF INFORMATION:  MOST OF THE LEARNING IN YOUR LIFE WILL NOW COME FROM THE INTERNET AND THAT REQUIRES LEARNING NEW SKILLS ON YOUR PART, AND ADJUSTING YOUR 'LEARNING STYLE'.  IT REQUIRES FOCUS.

ALL OF YOU NEED TO PHYSICALLY APPEAR AT LEAST ONCE PER WEEK, TO MEET WITH ME FOR A 'CHECK-UP' ON MON-TUES 7:30-11.

THE COMPUTER IS COLD. YOU HAVE TO CREATE YOUR OWN ATMOSPHERE WITH COMPUTER LEARNING.  YOU HAVE TO GO 'DEEP INSIDE' AND 'ZEN' WITH THE MATERIAL. A GOAL OF THIS CLASS IS TO ADD 'EMPOWERED, CONTINUOUS LEARNING' SKILLS TO YOUR SKILL SET!  EACH OF US HAS SPECIAL GIFTS -- OUR JOB IS TO FIND THEM AND DEVELOP THEM. IT HAS TO ABOUT 'QUALITY', AND LEARNING, AND 'GETTING YOUR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SKILLS -- ANYTHING LESS IS INTELLECTUAL MALNUTRITION.

=======================================================================

701 Students:  Last week we worked on Business Cards. Click https://auciello.tripod.com/701mashel.htm  then #20 for help.  The MW and TTH classes "went to town"  on this.  Jeff, for example, created a beautiful business card, with a blue art background, in vivid color!  It was Art and Business!  (We need Photo Glossy Paper.  Fry's Electronics, sometimes has it on sale for in packages of 10 for $2.00. If you bring in glossy paper that we can use for the Business Cards, the class will re-imburse you.)  We will continue this project this week, making sure everyone gets his/her cards done. From this project, you should be learning how to load a template from my Virtual Classroom, how to save it to a floppy disk (important), how to insert a photo which you have edited with Photo Editor, how to "wrap text" around the picture, formatting, fonts, color, World-Class Presentation Quality, and the ultimately practicality of defining yourself in the Digital Age with an email address, and (later) the address of your personal website on the card!  Following the practices of Learning Community, let's make sure every student gets this done this week so that  we can move on.  I am very pleased with what I have seen so far!

Also, continue with the 701 Start Quizzes.  You should be doing about 10 per week.  Bring the disks to me to have them graded.  I have a Grade Program on my computer.  They have to be graded and verified by the end of the semester, but you can still record the points, 25micro-00, if you pass the quiz, which you can tell if the program does not ask you to repeat the quiz.

Also, keep searching the web site for anything that is interesting to you, and that might be worth points when you do it.  Keep continually learning.

FOR CIS 757 WEB STUDENTS ONLY:  Since the class is about Internet Programming (usually meaning JavaScript / Java Applets) and Web Design (building Web Pages), I want to go in both directions.  (1)  I want you to learn Programming in JavaScript (JS), because that separates amateurs from Professionals, and (2) I want you to expand your talents to working with Color, Sound, Music, Images, Video (multi-media).  So this week, we will do

https://auciello.tripod.com/757COL-LOOP.HTM

(200-COL-LOOP) click and download it, to learn JS basics and also "757 Tables with Music and Images"

https://auciello.tripod.com/3G.HTM (200-TABLES)

You should get a Study Guide on JavaScript and HTML, the plastic sheets that cost about $3, (Fry's has them) and/or use Google to find a JavaScript Book on the web, and download it. If  you get stuck, we will do this in class.

Also, start looking for examples of good Web Pages, and earn up to 500 points credit for printing them out, and attaching your comments about the features that they have.  (100-FedEx for their web site).

All students:  I need to ensure that all students are receiving email with the link to this document.  If you know a student who is not getting this information, see me or TA and make sure that their email info is put on the MASTER file.  Please.
