Background:  Avian Flu virus has been around for years, and is carried in the intestines of Birds (chickens, turkey, ducks, geese, other migratory birds).  Usually carried and spread Bird-Bird, the current threat is that since the H5N1 version has spread Bird-Human, that it may combine and mutate with other viruses to become a highly contagious Human-Human disease, quickly spread world-wide!

Since the 2005 Avian Flu outbreak is the most  virulent of the outbreaks in the past several years, and since in 2003-04 supplies were stretched thin, there is a concern that there will be sufficient flu shots!  This CBS News Video speaks to this Problem and recommended Solutions!

Precautions and Preventing Transmission of the Avian Virus.

  • Use alcohol-based hand rub for hand hygiene.

  • Avoid poultry farms and bird markets where live poultry are raised or kept, and avoid contact with sick or dead poultry.

  • Separate raw meat from cooked or ready-to-eat foods. Do not use the same chopping board or the same knife for preparing raw meat and cooked or ready-to-eat foods.  Do not handle either raw or cooked foods without washing your hands in between. Do not place cooked meat back on the same plate or surface it was on before it was cooked.

  • Cook thoroughly all foods from poultry, including eggs. Egg yolks should not be runny or liquid.  The cooking temperature for poultry meat should reach 70 (C) / 158 (F).

  • Influenza viruses are destroyed by heat.

  • Wash egg shells in soapy water before handling and cooking, and wash your hands afterwards.

  • Do not use raw or soft-boiled eggs in foods that will not be cooked. After handling raw poultry or eggs, wash your hands and all surfaces and utensils thoroughly with soap and water.

  • Do not consume uncooked poultry or poultry products, including food with uncooked poultry blood. 

  • Careful and frequent handwashing.

  • Cleaning your hands often, using either soap and water or waterless alcohol-based hand rubs, removes potentially infectious materials from your skin and helps prevent disease transmission.

  • Wash your hands well and often. Around the office or home, cold viruses can be picked up by shaking hands or touching such common objects as doorknobs, telephone receivers, writing implements, or ATM machines.
  • Keep from rubbing your eyes or nose as viruses are easily transmitted through mucous membranes.
  • Avoid sharing food or "community" items.
  • Don't use the same toothpaste.
  • Avoid someone with a cold, especially in the first three days.
  • Spray inanimate surfaces, such as faucet handles, handrails or kitchen counter tops, with a virus-killing disinfectant.
  • Learn and practice proper stress management.
  • Allergies can increase your susceptibility to cold and flu viruses.
  • Eat fresh garlic. Garlic has natural anti-viral properties.
  • Get plenty of quality sleep.
  • Enjoy time with friends. Laugh

Transmission and Precautions:

  • Direct contact with infected birds is the main source of infection for humans.

  • Large amounts of the virus are excreted in droppings from infected birds (because the virus circulates in the intestinal system as well as the respiratory system) and thus can be carried in manure adhering to clothing, shoes or cages.

  • Domestic birds often become infected as result of contact with migratory waterfowl that carry the disease while being resistant to it themselves.

  • Farmers are advised not to permit visitors to their farms and chicken houses.

  • Also to separate poultry and pigs, a species that is susceptible to avian influenza and whose immune system in similar to that of people, so also susceptible to other strains of influenza.

  • Human infections via consumption of poultry products have never been reported. As a precaution, however, WHO advises consumers to thoroughly cook all foods from poultry, including eggs, since influenza viruses are destroyed by heat.
