WEEKLY ACTIVITY SUMMARY CIS 701/757/790 PROF. AUCIELLO

(Ver 2001.10.11)

PHILOSOPHY OF VIRTUAL CLASSROOM

In order to supplement class instruction, provide a 'history' of class activities, and keep 'everyone on the same page', the weekly activities, expectations, projects, assignments, and other information will be provided in this document. As you know, grades are based on points that are based on work done, and you have some freedom to pull down 'extra credit' assignments from your classes' page, and submit them. The emphasis is on learning, and your acquiring skills, and you have freedom to move 'outside the lines' of the class projects and undertake new one on your own, if you should choose.

So use what is documented here as a guidelines, but don't hesitate to 'venture out'. (rev sun.jul.15.2001)

CIS 701

WEEKS 5 - 6.

THERE IS A NEW PROJECT (701table2) THAT CONVERTS
TEXT DATA INTO TABULAR INFORMATION, THEN ADDS NUMBERS
IN A NUMERIC COLUMN. WORKING ON THIS OCT 10 - 11.

MASTERMIND. GET COPY. LEARN TO RUN IT.
100 POINTS FOR EACH LEVEL. SEE MR. A. IF YOU
PASS LEVEL 6 (HIGHEST).

ALSO, CHECK YOUR ANSWERS TO THE QUIZZES, AND REDO THEM
IF NECESSARY. FOR EXAMPLE, SOME STUDENTS HAVE RESPONDED
THAT THEY BOUGHT DISKS AND A VIEWBINDER YET THEY DONT
HAVE THEM!

THE QUIZZES ARE CHECKLIST TO HELP YOU. YOU DONT LOSE POINTS
FOR NOT KNOWING AN ANSWER (you go back later to revise it);
YOU LOSE POINTS FOR WRITING ANSWERS THAT ARE FLAT-OUT
NOT TRUE. IT IS ASSUMED THAT YOU WILL BE HONEST.

THE CODE THAT WE WORK UNDER ASSUMES HONESTY. IF YOU
BREAK THIS CODE, YOU CANT PASS THIS CLASS.

AND AGAIN, IT IS ALL ABOUT 'BENCHMARKING' WHERE YOU
ARE, PLANNING IMPROVEMENT, THEN MEASURING THE DEGREE
OF IMPROVEMENT! SO IF YOU NEED TO, GO BACK AND
REVISE YOUR ANSWERS IN THOSE QUIZZES!

FIND  701table2   AND WORK IT.

========================================

4TH WEEK (ENDING SEPT 28) ALL CLASSES

GET 701-MAP  (701map2.doc)

USE YAHOO MAP FOR YOUR ZIP CODE. COPY MAP TO CLIP BOARD
THEN PASTE TO "PAINT", LOCATE AND LABEL "LIBRARY"
SAVE AS FILE, IMPORT TO WORD, PRINT IT OUT.
IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE 701map2.doc ON CLASS
PROJECT LIST.

3RD WEEK:

A major document "Exploring Windows Explorer!" was posted under
CIS 701 DE Projects worth 100 points per page, up to 5 pages.

Try out the Explorer features and commands (e.g. copying files, etc)
as you find them on the document.

Another document "2. Computer Skills Inventory" was assigned -- let
me discussed the word "assigned" -- every project on the list is
"assigned" -- you should try to do all of them -- they all build your
skills and earn points toward your grade.

We started to talk about "Mastermind" -- start it if you can ...
100 points for each level that you win!

Students did a lot of catching up on points.

WEEK 3

WIN AT SOLITAIRE (see 'SOLITAIRE' assignment) .. explain strategy (up to 200 points for color and strong strategy analysis.) NOTE: EVERY STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO DO THE QUIZZES (701q1.htm ... etc) ANSWERING EACH QUESTION, READING EACH OTHER'S RESPONSES, THEN GOING BACK AND IMPROVING YOUR ANSWERS, USING YOUR OWN WORDS, ADDING 'YOUR OWN "SMACK"', PERSONALIZING IT, DOMINATING IT, AND PROVING MASTERY OF THE TOPIC!
EACH QUIZ IS WORTH 200 POINTS, WHEN DONE. YOU DONT GET THE 200 POINTS UNTIL YOU RESPOND WITH QUALITY ANSWERS FOR EACH TOPIC. SO KEEP DOING IT UNTIL YOU HAVE IT DOWN -- KEEP RESUBMITTING. RECORD YOUR POINTS ON THE ATTEND / PARTIC CHECK-IN FORM!
OF COURSE, YOU FINISHED 'VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS', PRINTED IT, PUT IN YOUR VIEWBINDER, AND LOGGED 300 POINTS IN THE ATTEN/PARTIC CHECK-IN, RIGHT?
AND OF COURSE, YOU WENT TO YAHOO, GOT A MAP OF YOUR ZIP CODE, AND MARKED SOMEHOW YOUR HOME AND THE CLOSEST LIBRARY. AND FOR EXTRA CREDIT, PRINT OUT A MAP WITH DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM YOUR HOME TO OJAI, CALIFORNIA. (OR WHEREEVER).
OF COURSE, YOU CAN BE CREATIVE. CREATIVITY + CRITICAL THINKING IS THE SOLUTION TO DIFFICULT TECH PROBLEMS!
AND YOU PRINTED OUT '701-FONTS', AND PUT IN VIEWBINDER, AND RECORDED POINTS.

THIS WEEK, I WILL GIVE YOU PRINTOUTS OF WORD TOOLBARS, AND YOU WILL HAVE TO EXPLAIN WHAT FUNCTIONS ALL THE ICONS OR FEATURES DO ... I WANT YOU TO DIG INTO WORD, AND DISCOVER ITS POWER.
THERE ARE ALSO SEVERAL ADVANCED 'WORD PROJECTS' -- TAKE A LOOK AT THEM OF COURSE, YOU CAN DO ANY PROJECT IN THE VIRT. CLASSROOM FOR CREDIT!
HOPEFULLY, YOU HAVE A PICTURE IN COLOR, AND SAVED ON DISK. (I MAY HAVE MISPLACED MY FLASH CARD READER .. UNTIL I RESOLVE THAT PROBLEM THERE WILL BE A DELAY IN GETTING MORE PICTURES. )
DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF MANY OUTSTANDING STUDENTS IN THE CLASS, I AM THINKING THAT WE CAN START 'BUILDING HOME PAGES' ... BEFORE WE DO, LETS GO OVER WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE TO DATE.
1. PROOF OF EMAIL. 2. TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT (PRACTICE THIS IN CLASS, TEAM CONCEPT) 3. FONTS 4. VISUAL COMMUNICATION 5. MAP 6. ALL QUIZZES (701q1.htm ... etc) 7. ATT / PART CHECK-IN UP TO DATE.

==========
AS I WAS SAYING, DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF MANY HIGHLY-TALENTED STUDENTS, THE CLASS IS MOVING FAST (TEAM CONCEPT IS 'KICKING IN') AND I THINK I CAN MOVE YOU INTO BUILDING A HOME PAGE!
=========
I NEED TO MENTION THAT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO OPEN YOUR IMAGE WITH PHOTO EDITOR AND BALANCE THE COLOR, ETC ...
=========
AGAIN, WITH THE PRESENCE OF TEAM-CONCEPT, HIGHLY-MOTIVATED STUDENTS, (LET'S QUICKLY GET EVERYONE UP TO COMPLETING WHAT IS DETAILED ON THIS PAGE), WE CAN BREAK NEW GROUND!
Ask me: "Mr. A., where are the famous quizzes -- the 'Start Disk' I keep reading about" ... I am going to update it right now.
JA. OUT. (early Sun. Morning)
(1 week later. Quizzes are finished and passed out.)
=================================================
WEEK 2:

REMEMBER THE WHOLE IDEA IS LOOK AT AL THE PROJECTS, READ AND STUDY THEM, AND GO AFTER AND COMPLETE THE ONES THAT YOU CAN! THINK BIG PICTURE, AND SHOWING PROOF OF WORK!
Continue working on Intro to Visual Communications. Ask if you dont know how to insert a graphics into a document. Try to finish project this week. Look out for viruses. If in doubt,check for viruses on my workstation. Search the 701 Dist Ed Page for projects that you can do independently. Pull ahead if you like.
Get 701-Map Assignment. Using Paint (Paintbrush), modify / personalize map in some way. (100). And/Or go to Yahoo, get map of your zip code, copy, and paste to Word, crop it, use Textbox to\show location of local library (100).
You should have an email address. See the 701 help file on 'getting an email address' if you have to. Sign up with hotmail, or yahoo, or whatever provider you choose. (100 points for sending me email to cyberprof@hotmail.com) You should also at this point be able to download 'Total Quality Management', "Deming's 14 Principles", and comment on them (short comments), stash in your viewbinder. (100 points each) You may also do the same with 'Principles of Total Communication'. (100) Earlier we covered creating fonts - see 701-fonts -- you can do that assignment (or any assignment on the list right?) (100) Hopefully, you have your picture, and try to insert it into a word document. (image with text - 701-image). (100) We will do an assignment where our last names were looked up using 'goto' or 'google', and printing the results. (100) Also, you can earn 100 points by winning at solitaire, and explaining your strategy, and using <Print Scrn> and copy and paste your winning array of cards into a document, that along with the statement of strategy will earn you points. All work must be put in your viewbinder, and available for me to check. Also store your work on a floppy, (you should own about 4 extra floppies and a carrying case at this point). Save your work by clicking file -- Save-As (select A:) or just type in the name in the file location box: A:\701-sol.doc So, at this point, you should be able to send email, pull assignments from the web, look at the help files, and 'check-in' files (these also can earn credit), and navigate the page and read the assignments posted, and you should know about working in a 'team environment'. Some students may opt to develop a home page, so bring in photos and I will check you out on using the scanner. ============================================================ PLEASE NAVIGATE ("HUNT") IN THE SECTIONS BELOW, LOOKING FOR ASSIGNMENTS THAT YOU CAN DO. YOU MAY DO ANY ASSIGNMENT LISTED ON THESE PAGES. THINK BIG! YOU MAY DO ANY THAT PROVES YOUR SKILLS IN 'INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY' -- WE ARE INTERESTED IN DOCUMENTING YOUR DEVELOPMENT HERE, YOU ARE THE CUSTOMER! I FACILITATE AND GUIDE AND DOCUMENT YOUR PROGRESS FOR GRADES. THIS IS 'LEARNING COMMUNITY' STUFF. JA. OUT.
==========================================================
SPRING 2001 (browse this section for projects: earn extra
 credit!)

AS OF APR 29 2001:

IF YOU ABLE TO HAVE HOMEPAGES OR PARTS OF THEM WORKING, 100 POINTS FOR EACH PART + 100 FOR THE MAIN PAGE (index.html) + 100 IF YOU CAN POST IT ON YOUR OWN WEB SITE, AND GIVE ME OR THE CYBER TUTOR YOUR LINK! ..

THIS IS ESSENTIALLY THE LAST MESSAGE THIS SEMESTER, AND WE ARE WORKING WITH ENERGY ON SPREADSHEETS. THE ON-GROUND CLASS HAS GOTTEN 200-300 POINTS BY DOWNLOADING AN EXPENSE JOURNAL (ON LIST OF PROJECTS) AND MODIFYING IT AND GRAPHING IT [IF YOU NEED HELP IN USING THE CHART WIZARD, EMAIL ME AT cyberprof@hotmail.com] AS WELL AS A CHART THAT TOOK COMPUTER COMPONENT PRICES (say from FRY'S NEWSPAPER AD) AND CREATED A CHART THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS:
ITEM PRICE 3YR-WARRANTY TOTAL
(5%)
MOTHERBOARD 349 17.50 367.50
120 GB HD 160 NNNN NNNNN
256K RAM 80
19" MONITOR 199
CD RW 120

TOTAL NNNNNN

THE SECRET HERE IS TO BUILD THE 5% INTO A FORMULA THAT AUTO
 CALCULATES THE WARRANTY RATE, AS WELL AS USING THE =SUM FORMULA
 (OR THE SIGMA SHORTCUT KEY).

 THEN IT WAS GRAPHED AS AN EXPLODING PIE GRAPH.

=========================================================

THE IDEA OF THIS MODULE IS FOR YOU TO DEMONSTRATE YOUR
ABILITY TO CREATE ABOUT 5 - 10 OR MORE (IF YOU NEED THE
POINTS) EXCEL CHARTS AND GRAPHS.

YOUR WORK MUST SHOW THE CHART AND GRAPH ON THE SAME
 PAGE, AND MUST BE 'PRESENTATION QUALITY'. AGAIN, SHOW ME
 WHAT YOU CAN DO!

=============================================================

THERE ARE POTENTIALLY 1600 POINTS FROM COMPLETING QUIZZES
ON THE 'START' DISK -- THAT HAS BEEN WORKING WELL ...

===

REMEMBER THE WHOLE IDEA IS LOOK AT AL THE PROJECTS, READ

======================================================
SPRING 2001
APR.20.2001
LAST MESSAGE FOR SEMESTER ...

TO EARN AN 'A' YOU MUST SHOW A QUALITY HOME PAGE WITH JAVASCRIPT AND HTML ASSIGNMENTS ON IT .. SEE WENDY ROSA'S FOR EXAMPLE ... IT MUST HAVE SOME TYPE OF ANIIMATION (GIFS, flash, OR STREAMING), AND IT MUST BE LINKED TO OUR CLASSROOM PAGE. OF COURSE, YOU ALREADY KNEW THAT.
SO HERE IS WHAT IS NEW: WE ARE WORKING IN FLASH. GET A TRIAL COPY ON CD FROM ME OR AN ASSISTANT. THE GOAL IS TO WRITE A FLASH FILE (.fla) AND EMBED IT IN YOUR HTML, SO THAT YOUR NAME GROWS FROM SMALL TO LARGE, WITH INDIVIDUAL LETTERS ROTATING AND CHANGING COLORS! THIS REQUIRES UNDERSTANDING SYMBOLS, LAYERS, AND TIMEFRAMES. ONCE LAYERS AND TIME FRAMES ARE UNDERSTOOD, YOU CAN INSERT SOUND, VIDEO, OBJECTS INTO VARIOUS LAYERS AND DEVELOP ADVANCED ANIMATION! START GETTING INFO ON FLASH.
IT IS THE THINKING NOW THAT USING HTML AND SOME JAVASCRIPT FOR THE BASIC TEMPLATE AND ADDING 'SIZZLE' WITH FLASH IS THE BEST WAY TO DO WEB PAGES!
HTML + FLASH.
==================================================

APRIL 07, 2001 2001
MR. A. PASSED OUT t2.html that plays an avi file using explorer. LINK a video file to your page. ON THE JAVA/JAVASCRIPT PAGE, THERE IS A PROJECT'757-QUIZ' (QUIZ IN JAVASCRIPT ABOUT JAVASCRIPT). MASTER THIS ASSIGNMENT. ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS. ADD QUESTIONS TO QUIZ. SHOW ME WHAT YOU CAN DO.
===============
AS OF MAR.07.2001:
DOWNLOAD 3A - 757. THIS CONTAINS ABOUT 7 ERRORS. WHILE IT IS DIFFICULT, YOU CAN DO IT. LEARN TO OPEN (2) WINDOWS -- EDIT AND NETSCAPE, AND learn how to enter javascript: in the location address, and learn how to read the error messages, and debug yourprogram. I am giving 100 points on your extra credit sheet for proving to me that you have it working, and you get an additional 100 points for having a working copy running on your web site. The new Attendance / Participation Form on the main page can give you a reading of how many points the class has completed. ClickCheck-in Listing. Points can be counted from what is on your pageon the web (100 points for each page) + additional, non-duplicate material in your notebook + what I have signed off on your Extra C.Sheet. Students picked up a lot of debugging skills on this assignment. Spend time with it. Conquer it!

AS OF FEB.28.2001:
MAKE EVERY LINK ON YOUR PAGE WORK ON YOUR WEB SITE. GIVE LINK TO JUAN REYES. MAKE IT WORK ON OUR CLASS PAGE.
As of Feb.22.2001: We took Ilda's page as a template, and distributed it. The template includes picture, music, resume, hobbies, career, likes, Music-Art. Upload it to your site. All links should work perfectly. Be sure hobby, likes, career are done. Be ready to insert link from my page. Be able to FTP. As of Feb.15.2001: You should have some html reference guide: either download one from our class page, buy the 'quick start' for 3.95 (bookstore) or pick up any html textbook. You have to be able to look up topics -- for example the syntax of the 'mailto:' command. You should be well along with your homepage: main page (index.html), and career.htm, hobbies.htm, and likes.htm. I have passed out several templates in class. Use whatever you like. You should have a web address. Some students got space on tripod.com. You should be a bit familiar with uploading files to your site, using FTP (see me) or a file manager program. Uploading skill is vital. You should be able to use some image editor: MS Photo Editor, of Liveview, Graphics Workshop, Adobe. You should have put together some art works with music, and linked them on your index.html under Music-Art. (this assignment came out real well, and take a look at what some of the students came out with. High Creativity runs optimally on High Technology! Literally, a 'nice show'!) We will be looking at the javascript in "scrolling banner" shortly. You should be able to handle, text color, background color (understanding how some colors can complement each other more), music, and images. Soon it will be expected that you will have an operating home page with the mentioned career, hobby, likes, and art-music links, and have it uploaded, and provide me with its link so i can list you on the the class page! There are 15-20+ '757' projects on the page. Go ahead and move ahead as you can. The class requires some type of "slide show" so you may start investigating that now. I have several slide shows on my page. Also, we will add video to your page, coming up. Mostly, work the assignments labeled '757' and to be sure that you get credit, print them out and put in a viewbinder as well as posting them on your site. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CIS 790:
790 ... WEEK 5 - 6 (OCT 11) TAKE '757/790 RUGGED JAVASCRIPT QUIZ' ASSIGNMENT -- TEMPERATURE CALCULATION IN JAVA (6c, 6d) START 790q1, q2 etc. =========================== APRIL 20, 2001
EMPHASIS IS NOW ON HAVING VARIOUS PROJECTS (APPLETS) RUNNING ON YOUR HOME PAGES ... SEE CHRISTOPHER ALDEN'S PAGE IN STUDENTS' HOMEPAGES ... ALL LINKS MUST WORK.

THERE ARE at least 5 quizzes 790q1.htm ... 790q5.htm, please print them out, and with a book in front of you, answer the questions, as much as you have to, look at the answers of other students, and compare, and glean as much info as you can. write answers in your own words. Use the quizzes as a forum for information exchange!

On the advanced level, there are (2) projects under JAVA 790 that you could engage: (1) a slide-show (this I would like to talk about in class) that loads images into an array, then pops them out of the array one at a time and displays them. There are really good programming principles in this assignment.

(2) The second one is the famous ART to Programming and Programming to ART assignment, where there is a color show of 256 cubed colors displayed. It uses 3 loops, of course, controls the background color, has "start" buttons, and loop control (start, stop, increment values).

There is a lot to gained from this assignment.

Also, there are other Math-based projects that are very interesting available ...

The goal is to produce quality web based work that demonstrates your skills in various areas. You may want to take the time to go back to your work, and heavily comment it, so you can refer to it later!

============================

APRIL 6, 2001
run quizzes 790q1.htm and 790q2.htm etc ... keep tryingas i write them. 100 points each.

AS OF MAR.14.2001 WORK ON 8A, 8B, 8C. COMPLETE UNICODE CHART.FOR EXTRA CREDIT, EXPLAIN EACH LINE OF JAVA IN ENGLISH FOR A MAX OF 100 POINTS PER PROJECT. YOU SHOULD KNOW WHAT EACH LINE OF CODE DOES.

=================================

AS OF MAR.07.2001: STUDENTS SHOULD BE FINISHING UP WITH TEMP. CONVERSION. AS AN EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT, 790 STUDENTS COULD DO THE DEBUGGING ASSIGNMENT OF JAVASCRIPT 757-3A PROJECT. SEE NOTES ABOVE IN 757. NOTE THE NEW WAY OF CHECKING IN (IN ADDITION TO THE LIST ON THE BOARD)... YOU MAY GO AHEAD AND DOWNLOAD ANY JAVA PROJECTS ON THE PAGE, AND WORK ON THEM INDEPENDENTLY FOR CREDIT.IF YOU CAN, START READING AND THINKING ABOUT PROCESSING FILES USING JAVA FOR NEXT WEEK. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. AS OF FEB.28.2001: THIS WEEK WE MUST COMPREHEND THE JAVA TEMPERATURE CONVERSION PROGRAM. HAVE A QUICK-REF CHART OR FIND A LINK TO RESEARCH JAVA STATEMENTS. THIS WEEK WE MUST MASTER THIS PROGRAM, AND SWITCH THE CODE TO CONVERT CENTI TO FAHRENHEIT.
Feb.22.2001: Find Temperature Conversion in 790. Compile the source code. Prove that it works from Cent to Fahren. Then carefully modify it to acceptFahren and output Centigrade. (100) Look up any Instructions you don't understand. Take snapshop of output paste it and source code into Word. Save this doc for posting it later on your website. (100)

Feb.15.2001: This week we worked on assignment '1d' -- "Hello, World" applet. At this point, you can use the java compiler. You can edit java source files, and compile as a .class object, insert that into html and test it, right? You have to be at this point or see me right away. We have compiled several assignments: amatha3, ahd hwloop. (100 points each). This week we discussed how to create colors using the color statement where values of red, green, and blue were created. (100) You should also be aware of the structure of a java program: library links, global definitions, init(0), paint() procedures, and event-trapping.
