  JULY.17.06 Since this is only a 5 week course and you need at least 3500 points for a "A", you need to earn at least 700 points per week,  50% of which must be projects from Online Quizzes (step #5).   You can earn points by studying computer vocabulary, of which there now are (3) ways:

1.  New:  "Complete-the-Definitions" lessons, such as https://auciello.tripod.com/vocab02.html,  etc, listed at https://auciello.tripod.com/olindex700.html.   (counts as ONLINE work)

2. New:   Select words from the 852-word vocabulary list at https://auciello.tripod.com/vocab852.doc   and rewrite their definitions,  and submit them to https://auciello.tripod.com/vocab852.html.    This method has you studying terminology,  then rewriting then submitting definitions.  (counts as ONLINE work)

3. "Start Disk".   This is kind of embarassing because I am always talking about "avoiding legacy",  old-technology,  and I am still using this system from the 90's that I wrote in dBase and DOS!  (what is that?)  (Emily take 100 points, you got me on this!)

Originally programmed for my daughter to help her with Graduate Record Exam vocabulary (it worked -- she got her Master's, later a law degree).  It uses the format of presenting complete sentences, in a timed procedure,  making the user match words with their definitions.  It is kind of fun. It is fast and instructive!  But, it is purely text-based!  (No visual learning which is what I am about now.)  It was soooo good that it is hard for me to replace it, but I am trying with the new vocabxxx formats (#1 above).  Pick up a Start Disk from me in K302 any Tues morning,  or contact my CIS TA, Renee, at reneedaltoncista@yahoo.com or contact me, joseph@auciello.net to get a copy.  Later, I will instruct you to email me your disk during finals week so I can verify the quizzes that you took and submitted for points.

Your quiz results will be uploaded automatically to my website, in the current and next version ... so the beat goes on ... the old just keeps getting upgraded.  email me for 50legacy points, if you understand.  (does not meet the requirement that 50% of your work must be from ONLINE quizzes)

IN ANY CASE,  there are a max of 2000 points available for Vocabulary from any (mix and match) source per class.  You can't obviously use the same points for two different classes, of course, but with over 6000 possible vocabulary points, you can find a way!  And of course this puts a lot of vocabulary on my Virtual Classroom for you to learn!

I am working so hard on lessons of Web Terminology ... which hopefully will come together soon ....  By the way some of you are making helpful comments on the lessons.   Keep it up.  Do you know what "Zenning" with the material means?   Do you know that I care?  That I am worried and stressed when I see mediocre performance?    It is a very, very competitive world,  and you fail, then I also fail,  and I hate failure ... Like my daughter, when I am challenged with a project, and not successful,  I just keep re-doubling my efforts until I hit success!   Sometimes I write 30 versions of a program before I feel that I "got it right"!

Yo, I need to talk here ... I am getting stressed with worry about you, my students, in this global market, the global economy.  Adding to my stress is that the educational system seems to be going downhill precisely at the time when it should be accelerating to catch up with the Euro and Pacific Rim, and India, and Indonesian economies!

I feel responsible not only just to maintain quality and critical thinking, but to push you ahead with 'robust technology'!!!    I am so concerned that sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, and say "what more can I do for these grasshoppers, so they can be successful in the future?"

The answers are, whether I can teach you everything or not -- are for you to develop the art of "hacking",  of 'discovery',  or empowerment, so that you can light the rocket engine inside yourself, and 'take off'  in learning.   ... so that you can "Zen" with your subjects, and figure out things, and get knowledge yourself!   This is how professionals do it!

Part of the 'hacking'  stuff ... I am making a multi-media birthday card, based on my slide show, with dancing images, videos of dancing babies, Beatle's songs, Birthday music, dancing cactus, etc ... and I needed to record a song .... Finally, I figured out, after some 'hacking' that Windows has a built in Sound Recorder, which I knew, but what I did not know was that I could record internally what I linked to!  

I am saying that I found some really good Happy Birthday music by googling for "Happy Birthday Spanish", found a nice, swing, soft-jazz version ... then I opened the Sound Recorder, found under Accessories - Entertainment, just pushed the Record Button, and recorded a  .wav   (dot wave) file, which I saved and played on the Card.  I plan to show you the Javascript that will play music when a button is pushed!

This was such a great experience that I will give you 100record points if you can use the sound recorder, either with a microphone or the internal input line!!!!  Save the file,  so that if I need to verify your points, you can attach and email it to me!   Most important, that you "hack" your way to discover how to do this!

I want to say in closing:   You need to be running fast just to keep up with the economy.   You have to be in the 90th percentile of what you do to be successful!  email me to discuss this. ... I need to talk more about this!

Good Morning.   "What's going on, Mr. A.?"    (you ask)

"What are your worrying about now?"

Time out for a story ... we used to call my daughter the "Walking Complaint Dept." (WCD).   She was always noticing, seeing, talking, commenting, criticizing .. Finally, after 20 plus years,  I am getting that her complaining was about the fact that "things were not right; they were not being done correctly.  That Dad and brother Mike were 'screwing up' in some ways."    Guess what?   She was mostly right!  Dad had to 'take it up a notch' and improve, which I did.  Now, her powers of observation and other talents, have led her to be a Patent Attorney where she works on the latest, state-of-the-art inventions,  and gets them  patented!   She checks everything 10 times!  and has said:   "Dad, give them interesting stuff,  and make them work hard!   I respected the instructors who taught me the most!"  Dad really listens now when 'Blitzkrieg' speaks!   I hope that helps you understand where I am coming from.

I want to talk to you a little here ... I am concerned about your education, what the future holds ... but I have 'gotten' the insight "Build it and they will come!"  ...  I think that there will be another economic boom, and if you "play your cards right"  by being prepared -- specifically, get a domain name,  I use tripod -- yahoo also has them.  Learn to upload (post) to your domain name.

Domain names can be free (yahoo, tripod, etc) or as inexpensive at $5.00,

the hosting can be as much as $80 per year,  or free (yahoo, tripod) if you use a name like  daltonre.tripod.com, as opposed to   daltonre.net  (paid) which can supply you with an mail address like   renee@daltonre.net (which is very professional,  and you can keep your work there and build a basic home page, look around my site for 'model' home pages.

Internet Explorer has a way of using the FTP command -- just type

ftp.xxxxx.com  into the address line where xxxxx is your domain name, and amazingly it will be accessible from your desktop, and you can just copy and paste work to it.  I am going to ask Robert Oliver to help me make a demo of this!

•  Next item, this is about what is happening to me ... so if I can explain it to you,  if I can be the 'model'  and you can learn from it ....  I have been diligently,  obsessively following the principle "Quality Creates Marketshare" and I am about to begin to try to market a scrolling slideshow of automobiles,

New CIS 700 / 701 Students.  This first week complete

4.  Also complete any two ONLINE QUIZZES in Step #5 for a weekly total of at least 600 points, on track to make 3000 ("B") or 4000 ("A") points. [if you create a Portfolio, showing 3500 points,  you will also earn a "A".]

I am teaching CIS 700 (sect# 0158) and CIS 701 (# 7965) starting July 17, and enrollment is open for those classes.  If you help someone get started in any of my courses, you get 100assist points, helping them understand how the course works, and the Six Steps to Success (which at 6am on a Monday morning sounds so "lame", but believe me, I wanted to make it as easy (seamless) as possible.  Understand?

It's Sunday Night, and "Exclude Day" with hope for repatriation / reinstatement / redemption!

I am going to break the pattern and not talk about the Avian Flu (cheers heard round the internet!) ... but instead, for a change, talk about improving your Information and Internet Technology Skills:

Topic A: Active X.  Go to google.  Search for "Active X". The quotes makes the search a bit faster by searching for everything in quotes. Understand that it permits advanced web features like Multi-media effects, etc.  Look it up.  Read about it, and submit 50activex points!

Topic B: Consumer Reports.  When I opened Consumer Reports, which my wife had just bought for me, the article "Computer Problems and How to Fix Them Yourself"  jumped out at me!  These are 'baby' problems, but if you start your hacking-problem-solving going, you can work up to solving larger ones!

Click  www.ConsumerReports.org   click "Computers and Electronics" then "Easy Fixes for Computer Problems."   Read it and submit 75consumerreports points!

Check it now!  https://auciello.tripod.com/deform7830.html.txt   Note alphabetized names with scores ascending, with dates and explanations.  If I don't believe someone's score, I just drop them, and have them prove points to me before I reinstate them! 

Then I access the class roster on the college website.  If a student has a low grade, I drop them today, last drop to give a "W", rather than give them a D or F later on!   With a "W", they can re-enroll, which I encourage, and roll their meager point total forward, and keep working while enrolling in CIS 700, section 7960 --

I was talking with a student at the Student Senate conference, and I realized that the skills that I put into his / her head, are what will make a difference on the next campus or job!   You have a big responsibility to yourself,  and I have a huge responsibility, and I don't intend to screw it up, so I will push and push you, as much as I can, to urge you to high-performance and success!   If you know what I mean, award self 25success points.

Dear Student:  

   Just talking here:  You know that Jim McCracken and I got some large contracts to teach TQM and related to industry (well, you know it, now), and since I was writing about it,  I (we) had to practice it.  (It was so funny; we were not doing what we told others to do!  And when it was pointed out, and made clear by our friends and family, we had to "re-engineer" ourselves!)

   Now, I have added "robust technology" to Quality, and I am getting top students who are "devouring" my course and "out-performing" me!  I love it! 

    This is exactly the way to work!  High-Quality,  High-Performance! With a lot of 'feedback' / corrective action / status reports to you, the 'customer'!

    So, check your scores below -- they are as of April.07 -- and do the following checklist:

    1. Check your enrollment by going to www.lattc.edu -- STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM -- Bs sure that you are enrolled.  If not, email me immediately!

    1a.  7966 students are in the 2nd week of 6 weeks, and should be on track with about 1200 points (600 per week -- 6 week course -- to get 3500+ -- "A" range.)

    2.  Not 7966:  If low, below 1000, think about dropping now, and re-enrolling for my summer courses (I will teach 700 and 701 this summer!)  I will have to drop students with low scores in about 2 weeks anyway!   And keep on doing the work, and you can 'roll your points' forward into the next class! 

    3.  If over 1000, and want to stay enrolled, make sure that at least 50% of your points come from the Online Quizzes!

    Closing ... If "social separation" goes into effect, in the event of a Flu breakout -- the news says some birds are returning from Asia to Alaska this summer, and in late summer (August), other birds from Alaska will take the Pacific Flyway (like a Route 5 for birds) here in Calif on their way to the border and beyond -- then it is absolutely imperative that you adjust yourself so that you can do a lot of school work,  work, etc via the internet.  Do you 'get' what I am talking about?

    On the other hand, the flu, when it comes may only affect chicken farmers, and may be able to be 'localized' -- maybe, but I think it is best to prepare for the worst, and expect the best!

    I plan to show students soon how to make letterheads like this, usually in both 701 AND 757 M-W, and I plan to make a template to give everyone!

Dear Students:

 I  just finished the Fall grades. I spent extra time verifying them.  It is a problem specific to online classes -- the student and the instructor don't meet -- so a student might not 'get' the robust-technology, learning-community, Total-Quality-Management full-speed-ahead-to-technology 'smack' that I preach.

 In semesters past, they did, when I had fewer online students and more face-to-face contact.  This time, there  were many names that I could not connect with, and, apparently, some of them did not connect with me, either!   So I had an instance of a student reporting a lot of work that he/she did not do.  As dumb as it sounds, this caused me to triple-check every entry for every student on the system (written up as #13 on the https://auciello.tripod.com/iq01.html  quiz.)   

I did this because I wanted to verify the information before I lowered his grade. Your points, the entire point system, is a “contract” between you and me:   You do the work; the compensation is the grades.   So it is an important relationship, and I work hard to keep up my end of the contract.   So before I lowered his grades several notches, I went over everything, as I said, 3 times, just to be sure that he/she failed their part of the contract!.  The point here is – I assume honesty, integrity, but I do check. It makes me sad on several levels, when I come across a person cheating!   There is a world out with people of honor, whose word is an oath,  and I want to encourage an old-fashioned environment, so that you could be fortunate enough to live and work in it.   Thus, I accept your word, as you do mine (but I have incredible capacity to check everything that you do).  I hope that this makes it clear.

 The cheating, (the fraud really)  really bothered me:  it is so 'contra' to what I teach and try to stand for.   It is so destructive.   For sure, it does not come from a holy, or sacred place.  Or a high level place, that strengthens an individual and society!

 Flat out, it is easy to spot fraud in technology.   It shows up real quick.  And no one has the patience for it, to try to help out the 'perps'.  So, they are quickly dismissed, blacklisted, and forgotten.   Cheating at this level means that you are pretty much destined for failure,  unless you can make a 180 degree turn-around.  Reading my 'Total Quality Management' stuff should help.

 I am also concerned about how 'cheating' became part of a students' personal qualities:  i mean he/she had to learn it from someone, somewhere, and then it gets worse as i realize that he/she was brought up in an environment that was set for them to fail!  The very forces that were supposed to help them grow up and succeed were guiding the students to failure -- like lemmings following the leader off the cliff.   Momma mia! 

 Do you get that 'cheating is its own reward!'   that the 'consequences of an act' are built into that act?  

 There was only one case of major cheating, and several smaller others.  The small ones that occurred infrequently could, by a stretch, be a mistake in submitting points. (be careful to be able to back up what you submit)  So if it was incidental, I accepted it as accidental.  Submit points only after you have completed the work, and have evidence for it! 

 I have a quality grading system.  It is part of what I teach -- Total Quality Management! -- so my system tells me who did  what, when, and to what degree, for how long, and it also has some other detectors built in.  Really, mostly, this has not been a problem.  Just recently.

Bringing deception to technology is like shooting yourself in the leg before a race.  Examine yourself, as I said, read, and adopt the 'TQM' principles --  https://auciello.tripod.com/14tqm.html -- that I wrote about. Do 'self-examination'.   If the tqm stuff does not work,  follow the principles of 'Zero Quality Management'  -- https://auciello.tripod.com/zqm.html -- both found on 'page 2' of my website.  (Just kidding about following the ZQM principles.)

 You can earn 100 points each for printing out, and stating "I agree" or "I disagree' to each principle, and signing it, and putting it in your project notebook (that I want to see at the end of the course).

 I feel better having gotten that off my shoulders.   It is all about High Performance, Empowerment, Total Quality, High Technology -- any thing less, and you are just wasting your time and my time!

As some of you know,  I take terrific pride in my course -- its technology, its reliability, its security, its accuracy,  its Quality.   For some reason, I am driven onward and upward to continually improve and innovate (sounds like one of my speeches) .. I feel it inside of me.  It bothers me when I don't hit quality.  It actually gets to me!   But the good news, for me, the instructor, the course manager, is the joy I see when some students actually out-perform me!   Gadzooks!   One of the last kids who did this is a Patent Attorney working for a premier law firm, working on patents for E-Bay, Intel, H-P, etc ...  There is some material about Cyndi, my daughter, on the website that she helped me with ...

So, while I dislike playing 'Point Police',  I am forced into it.   Some students want to just 'skate', to gloss, and they challenge the instructor to make them deliver.  Thus I become a 'Point Policeman'.   But, the joy of working with points, and not personality, allows me to turn on wizards like  Bang who today turned in a book that I swear I could sell in the bookstore for $75!  I 'flipped' over its quality, and she really loves the stuff.   Can you say 'endogenic'?   She 'got the power within'.   The course lit her fire, and what ever she does in the future will probably also be at this World Class level!   So, if I have to make students 'toe the mark',  at least, I am rewarded by those who take the point system and 'run for touchdowns'!

Tonight, I had to make some tough decisions. Based on fact, on accurate, reliable, information -- no 1400 pts, no enrollment -- and I dropped some students that it hurt me to do!   I WILL RE-INSTATE THEM IN A MINUTE, IF I AM WRONG, AND THEY SHOW ME ABOUT 2200 POINTS, WHICH IS WHERE EVERYONE SHOULD BE RIGHT NOW!

ALSO, IF YOUR NAME IS NOT ON THE LIST,  I SUGGEST THAT YOU KEEP WORKING, BUILDING POINTS, AND RE-ENROLL IN ONE OF MY CIS 701 CLASSES IN THE FALL ... ONE IS CLASSROOM -- 7-9 MW K302 -- AND THE OTHER ONE IS SECT 7966, ONLINE AND I WILL WORK WITH YOU!

The most important is last -- Your developing the skills to solve problems on how to use the computer and internet as a tool, to use the web for research to develop your critical thinking skills,  and to develop a process where you can use "Help" and thinking skills to get answers from the system ... this is the "Sina Qua Non" -- that for which there is no equal -- this is the litmus test for 'technological empowerment',  which is what I reserve the 'A' grade for those who reach it by dint of their developing 'hacking', problem-solving skills, by their using the computer and internet as tools themselves to extend their information technology skill set!   (email me with an example if you know what I am talking about for 100empowerment  points!)  ... There are Six Steps to Success (this is the 3rd step), that are listed on http://auciello.tripod.com  (click this link to see them).   You must have Steps 1 and 2 completed before Wed. 4pm, keep reading the NEWS (this step) every day, learn how to use the Atten. / Partic. Form (step 4), and be clicking on Online Quiz Index (#5)!

This course is about finding assignments, doing them, printing them out, pressing the Submit Button for Online Quizzes, then submitting points through the Atten. / Partic. Form!   Only what is on the A/P form that I can verify, and posted (when you hit the Submit Button) can I see.  (Later on, you can show me your portfolio, especially if you are going for an "A").

I did the Six Steps so that it is easy for you.  If you can't see and do the Six Steps, then there is almost no way that you can pass this course!   There is no other way.

How to earn points?   (1) Do the Online Quizzes (#5); (2) Run quizzes from the 701 Start Disk;  (3)  click  https://auciello.tripod.com/GRADE.DOC   and select projects from that list; (4)  Under the headings CIS 701 on both page 1 and page of my website, find assignments (projects are everywhere, just start looking!) 

Since by Friday, I will start dropping students who don't show at least 600 points, you can get those points efficiently by doing the Online Quizzes, or running 24 quizzes on the Start Disk.   Do what is easiest for you; but always look for the hard stuff, and drop back if you have to!

I want to talk with you ... technology has changed the landscape of how I teach, how you learn, how we communicate.  I may never meet some of you, and you might really "get into my head", really 'zen' this course, become immersed in the TQM, Virtual Learning Community,  Robust Learning,  Visual-Interactive-Virtual Applications stuff that I do!   Further, later on the Internet Radio Station / Cyber Cafe!   That is the price of progress.   I miss the personal contact, really miss it.  But, now, I am starting to have very large classes, and I am really taking my course up several notches in efficiency and effectiveness!   I really am becoming a Cyber Professor (one of my email addresses is  cyberprof@hotmail.com -- and I am working more at home, and spending less time commuting.   Computing time is up; commuting time is down.   And this is the Future.  If I can do it,  if I can get you to work this way, we are more efficient, though, pensively, we need to acknowledge that we are giving up some valuable human and social contact!  I am training you for the future!   Ya Wohl!  Si!  Claro!  Pronto!

Also, since I have taken most of the bugs out of the course, I will be stricter on you.  You must earn a substantial number of points each week or face being dropped.   I am working at home, using FrontPage, on a blazingly fast computer, connected by lightning cable, taking orders from my wife, and having my son on the phone, ... so it is a great world (A Brave New Technological World) and welcome to it.  The rule is constant diligence and pushing the edge for learning.   Continuous Learning is a key concept.

Dec.20:  Let me tell you about the course. Look at http://auciello.tripod.com  -- CIS 701 (Business Applications on the Computer) and CIS 757, a very cool course in FrontPage, Web Design, JavaScript, etc. are my Primary Courses.

So I can give you Extra Credit for any work you do on those courses, just for your learning, but this course (700) is about

(1) "computer concepts (OK) with emphasis on the physical components of a computer system (bit basic);

(2) hands-on introduction to operating systems with emphasis on Windows (XP) and DOS (legacy but good!).

(3) Plus an introduction to programming concepts" using JavaScript. (Awesome!). 

 For the Overview and Hardware portions, I wrote 80 Quizzes that are on a Floppy Disk that are worth 25 points each. The quizzes are in the back of the 700/701 Applications Workbook, sold at the LATTC bookstore. Or you can download them from https://auciello.tripod.com/701startbook.doc   -- Look them over.

 ... You really can't start on them until you receive the '701 Start Disk' which I will pass out the week of Jan 12 when you are back in school. If you like, try to match up the questions and answers. It will all be done from a program on the FD that can run on any IBM compatible computer. Some Macs will also run it, if they are set up for it.

For the Windows portion, I will write some On-Line quizzes, using my Virtual-Interactive-Visual-Applications (VIVA) technique --

I know that teaching you how to find the answers, how to think critically and to solve problems, is the greatest thing that I can do for you, so this vacation I will write some quizzes about Windows, Windows Features, Using the Help System, etc, and I will clue you when they are ready. For DOS, I will give you reading material with examples for you to try, show you how to get help for DOS, and give you a short DOS Batch File to study. DOS topics are also on the 701 Start Disk.
 
For JavaScript, we will use very simple HTML code, enough to allow us to use JS, and I will embed it, so that we can run it and test it, and modify it, using Internet Explorer. If I got some good T.A.s from your school, I would give them upload access to one of my sites, where we could post any HTML/JS that you wrote, and, of course, then you would be on the World Wide Web! The portal of your cyber career! (Please have any such top students in programming and Internet contact me asap! Please. I will figure out some compensation for their help!)

It is the way that I can keep track of what you do (or don't do). Every day, starting with the first day of class, you must use this form to record Attendance (25 pts per day, 4 days per week) and, of course, whatever projects, quizzes that you complete.

You must press the 'Submit Button' a lot in this class! ... I designed this attendance system. I know time, location, and duration of your work in this class! Which is good, because then you and I both have evidence of your work in this class, and it justifies my awarding you a top grade!

I know that I am redundant, but I put a lot of work in writing the On-Line materials for this course, with the expectation that you will learn from them, and possibly understand where I am coming from ... Maybe even helping me to help lots of students like yourself cross the Digital Divide ...

For students at the DMHS, I will be on campus sometime every Wed afternoon after Jan 12. You can reach me anytime by email that I check daily. If we still have trouble communicating, I will give you my pager no. Flat out, we must be in contact -- because this course is about your continually doing work, continually reading my emails, checking with this page, and even noting from the Att/Part Form what your classmates are doing! You can take every quiz repeatedly until you hit the Max score. You can even submit points for any Computer or Web Learning Experiences that you have outside the class!


Because I am a writer (grant writer) and a Programmer (16 computer languages), I created a 'ton' of materials (150MB) on this site. Go thru them. Hack them. Go everywhere. I will give you extra credit for learning!

Another important thing is that my partner and I, at California Technical Training, used to give seminars on Quality, and the High Performance Workplace, (read the TQM stuff for 100TQM pts) so I am part of that world, and I have the strictest requirements for quality, for zero errors. It really works! Quality creates Marketshare! So part of my 'propaganda' and 'hype' will be to drag you into that world. My daughter listened to me, and is today a Corporate Patent Attorney, submitting patents for breakthrough technologies! Cyndi blew past me like I was standing still! The expectation is that you will also pass me, as I bring you to my level, and give you the inertia to go beyond! Do you understand what I mean?
